Lent is not merely about giving something up. Choosing to restrain ourselves, simplify, and declutter often makes room for something else to take its place. Many Christians have practiced Lent by taking up a spiritual discipline that helped them focus their attention on Christ. This could include a wide range of practices, including praying the Lord’s Prayer, reading scripture, spending time being still with God, feeding the hungry, volunteering at a homeless shelter, and countless others. I want to encourage you to spend time praying with God to see if you sense the Holy Spirit inviting you into a particular practice. As you listen to the Spirit, I will be introducing a simple practice that I think would be good for all of us at Vergennes Church to do, which is to practice gratitude. I hope you’ll be able to join us on Sunday at either 9:30 or 11:00 as we begin our message series for the season of Lent called “Grateful”. You’ll learn how this simple practice could truly transform your life, and help you to enter into an Easter celebration like you never have before.
